Sciple’s Mill

Living in rural Deep South, you met some great characters. My favorite southern archetype is that of the story teller. In my travels this weekend I encountered such a person.

Meet Mr. Edward Sciple. He is the owner of a watermill that has been in operation since before the War Between the States. Corn is ground into meal and into grits for a fair price. It is then shipped locally and as far away as Canada. Mr Sciple shared his business philosophy and a few stories about how honest folks can be when trusted.

My plans are to return to the mill when deer season is over. That is the only time he takes a break from grinding corn. Which, in case you didn’t know, all deer run east because that’s where they came from…Alabama. Mr. Sciple is the embodiment of the classic southern story teller. I could spend hours enjoying his stories and tall tales. What a great guy!

  3. You capture the south so beautifully…maybe one day we can collaborate on a Southern themed show

  4. One of my favorite memories is of my grandmother needing some corn meal and taking a load of dried corn to a mill run by water and bring back a bag of cornmeal. Thank the fates she decided to take me with her or I would have missed it. I love this series of photos. They are just so real.
